Chris's Coffee and Custard ⇨
Chris's Coffee and Custard (CCC) was started by Beth Woodrum. Beth had a dream for her son Chris,
who has Down Syndrome, and others in the community. Her dream was to create opportunities for gainful and
meaningful employment for individuals of all walks of life, focusing on the special abilities
community. She felt that individuals having a job and receiving a paycheck would give them a sense of
dignity, purpose and belonging and help them develop independence. Her most significant goal is to make
a positive change in a person's life.
Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center ⇨
The Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center (RVSHC) was established in 1959, and its mission
is to improve quality of life by helping children and adults communicate effectively. RVSHC's
caring professionals hold master and doctoral degrees in the specialities from accredited
universities and are licensed by the state of Virginia to practice audiology and/or speech-language
pathology. They have been helping people of all ages develop their communication skills, so they can
better relate to the world around them, and they provide such services as hearing health and voice therapy.
St. Vincent's Home/Blue Ridge Autism ⇨
St. Vincent’s Home was an orphanage built by St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Roanoke on March 1, 1893 and
was staffed by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky. A school was designed to meet the educational
needs of the orphans and later became known as The Achievement Center. In 2009, Blue Ridge Autism Center,
established in September 2002, and The Achievement Center merged to form Blue Ridge Autism and Achievement Center (BRAAC),
operating as a DBA (doing business as) under St. Vincent’s Home. The lack of programs for the adult
population caused another evolution in St. Vincent's Home. The result was SVH Adult Services and SVH Family Services
becoming a reality. In February 2016, these programs were introduced to the community and St. Vincent’s Home is
now able to offer services to individuals over a complete lifespan as well as grow their services to family members.
Boys and Girls Clubs of SW VA ⇨
The mission of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia (BGCSWVA) is to enable all young people, especially those
who need them most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The BGCSWVA
provides a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals, and life-enhancing
programs and character development experiences. They enhance such development by instilling a sense of competence,
usefulness and belonging. The BGCSWVA provides direct support to many elementary schools in Southwest Virginia and
are open Monday-Friday into the evening hours during the school year and all day during the summer. Club participation
is affordable to all families, and no families are turned away because of inability to pay.
Mill Mountain Zoo ⇨
Mill Mountain Zoo (MMZ) was founded in 1952 and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit operated by the Blue Ridge Zoological Society.
Its mission is to promote an appreciation and understanding of wildlife and habitat preservation through the usefulness
of quality exhibits and educational programs, and to work in cooperation with other animal conservation programs. MMZ
believes in the highest standards of animal care, conservation management of endangered species and fostering science
education through its animal collection. Because MMZ is also a recreational attraction, it strives to provide an enjoyable
experience for visitors. MMZ also focuses on species native to Appalachia and, in particular, the Blue Ridge Mountains. In
addition, MMZ is the only major, nonprofit, wildlife attraction on the entire 469-mile span of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
